3 Things I Will Work on For Next Year

Many, if not all, people set goals for themselves. Some people have small goals like eating healthier. Some people set lifelong goals like making the Olympics. I have many goals, but here is 3 that I will work on for next year.

My first goal is to get better at math. Not just the hard subjects they teach in math, but my attitude towards it. I never really liked math. It has always been my least favorite subject, and always will be. That will never change. I will, however, try to change my attitude. Instead of thinking that math is useless, and impossible, I will try to think of why it will come in handy. I will also need a lot more practice at P.E.D.M.A.S. and integers. I find these subjects hard, but I will try to get better.

My second goal I’d like to work towards is talking to people or socializing. I have always been a bit shy, but that doesn’t explain why I get my sister to do all of the talking whenever we meet someone new. Socializing hasn’t exactly been one of my strengths either. Whenever I am at the store to pick something up for my mom, I tend to not talk to the cashier. It’s not because I don’t want to talk to them, I just freeze up. If I do muster up the confidence to talk, it will be very quiet or squeaky. I don’t really know how to fix this. Every time I go to the store, I say to myself that I will talk, but usually don’t end up doing it.

The last thing I want to work on is having less screen-time. Most of the time I will use my tablet until it dies or until I get really tired. Electronics are fun to play on, but unhealthy to be on for a long period of time. I might play on the wii with my sister, or watch YouTube on my tablet. I will watch YouTube for HOURS at a time. I will try my best to watch way less YouTube, and go outside! So instead of about infinite hours of screen-time I will try to cut it down to 1 or 1 and a half hours.

Overall, I have many goals to accomplish and I will try very hard to work on them. Sometimes goals take a while to accomplish, but as long as you put an effort into reaching them, you will get better at anything you want to try.

Pearls edit

If you were born in June, your birthstone is the pearl. Pearls are found in clams and oysters. However, in ancient Greece, people thought pearls came from Aphrodites tears. These translucent gems are typically milky white or cream, but they can also come in lavender, green, black, blue, and silver. It all depends on the oyster or clam the pearl came from and the environment in which it was produced.

A June Bride edit

June is known for weddings, but do you know why? In Ancient Rome the Romans celebrated Juno, the goddess of marriage, around the month of June. In the 15th and 16th centuries, June was the month when people first bathed after the long winter. Both traditions lead to an increase in marriages during the month. Today, over 10 percent of all weddings each year are held during the month of June.

St. Lawrence Seaway edit

On June 26, 1959, President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II dedicated the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The seaway is the worlds longest inland waterway. Ships are able to travel the seaway from Duluth, Minnesota, to the Atlantic Ocean, which is a total distance of more than 2,000 miles. More than 50 million tons of cargo moves along the seaway each year. Ships carry steel, wood, coal and much more.

Edit- Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, the Union Soldiers brought news to Galveston, Texas that the war was over and all slaves were now free. Today, this occasion is celebrated as Juneteenth. It is also sometimes called Black Independence Day or Emancipation Day. Even though Juneteenth is only recognized as a legal holiday, in Texas and Oklahoma, it is celebrated across the United States with a festival and speach.

Frank Lloyd Wright edit

One of America’s best-known architects is Frank Lloyd Wright. Born on June 8, 1867, Wright went on to design many unique homes and buildings. He loved nature and wanted his designs
to fit in with their natural surroundings. His most famous design is called Fallingwater. Wright built the home so that a river flowed under it and used rocks from the river to help it blend into the scenery, making it look more like a waterfall than a house.

Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson is a book series written by Rick Riordon. It is a 4 book fantasy series, that I love to read. They are full of adventures and epic battles. You should read Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson is a 12 year old boy who realizes he is a half-blood, or a demi-god. A demi-god is a person who is half mortal and half god. As soon as you realize you are a half- blood, your power gets way stronger. The stronger your power gets, the more monsters will track you. Percy is the son of Poseidon, one of the big three. With his father being very powerful, so is Percy. Percy can control water, ships, breath under water, and talk to horses. Percy loves being the son of the sea god, well sort of.

Being a half-blood means having a god for a parent. There are many gods in Percy’s world. Like, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. The big three. The big three are the most powerful gods on Olympus and in the underworld. Zeus is the god of the sky, and of lightning. Poseidon is the god of the sea. And Hades is the god of the underworld. All three swore an oath to not have anymore children because they were too powerful for their own good. Both Poseidon and Zeus have broken the oath having Percy and Thalia. Having powers would be so cool.

Percy has many friends who help him out a lot. Like…. Grover is the satyr who found Percy. Annebeth is the daughter of Athena and is a really good fighter. Thalia is the daughter of Zeus who died saving her friends, but got revived by the magic golden fleece. Tyson is Percy’s little brother, who is a baby cyclops. Chiron is a noble centaur who taught Percy all about the gods. Last but not least there is Percy’s mother. Sally Jackson is a brave woman who made sure her son, Percy, was safe at any cost. Percy has a lot of friends; all that help him with many things.

Percy goes on many quests throughout the story. Quests are very special because not many are given out. Before every quest, the lucky hero who goes must confront the Oracle. The Oracle is a mummy that Apollo, the sun god, summoned to stay at Camp Half-Blood. The Oracle is a prophecy-teller. She says wether the quest will be a success and what will happen in a series of riddles. Percy likes to sneak off to help his friends on quests he thinks will not be successful. He has had to go on many, himself.

Overall, Percy Jackson is a really good book series that I love to read. It’s  action packed and enjoyable. You should definitely read the Percy Jackson series.

Helen Keller edit

When she was 19 months old, Helen Keller was stricken with an illness that caused her to lose her hearing and sight. In her younger years, Keller communicated with her family by using hand signals that she invented. Keller started learning Braille and American sign language under the tutelage of Anne Sullivan. The amazing story of her formal education was depicted in the play The Miracle Worker, which was later adapted into a film. In 1904, Keller graduated from Radcliffe College, becoming the first deaf and blind person to recieve a Bachelor’s degree. Later in life, Keller help found the ACLU and became an advocate for a number of social causes, including womens suffrage and labor rights.

Donald Duck edit

Donald Duck first appeared in a cartoon called “The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934. He became such a popular character that more cartoons were made with him than were made with Mickey Mouse! Donalds original voice was provided by Clarence “Ducky” Nash. Nash played the plucky duck for 50 years. Known for his temper tantrums, Donald became the subject of a daily comic strip in 1938.

Fallingwater edit

The vacation home of Edgar J. Kaufmann is perched above Bear Run, a mountain stream in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. The home, which is called Fallingwater,” was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright believed that “no house should ever be on any hill.” It should be of the hill, or belonging to it, said Wright, who was born on June 8, 1867, Fallingwater, with its ledges and lots of natural stone, is like a part of the forest.
